How To Remove Dents From Plastic Bumpers

Blog

If you find plastic bumper damage after bumping into a concrete marker in the parking lot you don't have to run to the auto body shop. In many cases, the cost of the repair isn't worth the trip. A plastic bumper is easy to fix, even for an inexperienced DIY person. Here are some tips to fix a dented plastic bumper.

Prepare to Work

For this project, you need:

  • heat resistant work gloves
  • wet cloths
  • spray bottle of cold water or compressed air
  • car shampoo (optional)
  • screwdriver,
  • mallet
  • hair dryer or hot air gun

Wipe the dented area with a wet cloth, or use car shampoo, if the area is extremely dirty. Let the bumper dry. Cleaning helps tools used to fix the dent work better.

Try to Push the Dent Out by Hand

If the bumper has a small dent, push the dent with your hand from behind the bumper. For bigger dents, try to tap it with a mallet.

On some vehicles, you may need to remove the bumper. Bumpers are attached by screws or clips. Remove the screws with the screwdriver, or press the center of the clips with the screwdriver blade to remove them.

Apply Heat

If pressing the dent out by hand alone doesn't work and there are no signs of chipped paint, apply heat. Pour boiling water on the dent.

Use a hair dryer on the highest setting, and go over the dent in a sweeping motion for three to five minutes. For a larger dent, try two hair dryers at once. Heat expands the plastic making it more pliable.

Before the dent cools, hold a damp cloth on the back of it for several seconds to help it keep its form. Spray the area with cool water or spray it with compressed air to contract the plastic.

The dent may pop on its own in a couple of minutes. If the dent doesn't pop, attempt to press it out by hand again, or tap larger dents with a mallet until they pop out.

Apply heat from a heat gun. Hold the heat gun around one foot away from the dent. Since a heat gun is stronger than a hairdryer, it can damage plastic, if you hold it too close. Also, keep watch for changes in paint.

Reattach the bumper. Your vehicle will look much better after the dent is out, and you save money. If you don't trust your skill, or the bumper is seriously damaged, have it replaced by an auto body shop.
